Jazz Session Series returns to The Square this holiday season on Thursday, December 14 from 5-8pm. This monthly series will inspire you with the sounds of smooth jazz and the rich tones of brass and string instruments. To get a look behind-the-scenes, we asked this month's featured artist, Sam Keedy, about his journey in music and influences.

Introduce yourself and tell us where you are from?

Hello, my name is Sam Keedy and I am originally from Colorado.

What do you love most about attending Frost School of Music at the University of Miami?

This is my fifth year in college and the first year of my master's degree. South Florida is a truly unique and special place with its own rich cultural and musical identity. Studying at the Frost School of Music has been an insightful and transformative experience working with a faculty of masters such as Marcus Strickland, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Brian Lynch, Etienne Charles, and Dafnis Prieto just to name a few.

What instrument(s) do you play and how long have you been playing for?

I have been primarily a trombonist and composer for over a decade now. I play piano and produce music as well.

What can we expect from your performance?

You can expect an evening of dignified and thoughtful music with a blend of original compositions and timeless jazz classics from Keedy's swinging trio.

Top 3 musical influences?

My biggest 3 musical influences would have to be Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, and Duke Ellington.

If you could play with any one musician (living or dead) who would that be and why?

If I had the opportunity to play with any musical group it would have to be Earth, Wind, and Fire!
