New Wave Artist-in-Residence Program: Richard Aybar
CityPlace is proud to present the latest iteration of the New Wave Artist-in-Residence program, an initiative founded by Sarah Gavlak with a mission to foster meaningful dialogue around diversity, inclusivity, and equal rights. By supporting emerging artists from underrepresented communities, the program brings unique perspectives to the public through art exhibitions and residency opportunities.
This season’s featured artist is Richard Aybar, a sculptor and furniture designer whose evocative creations explore sustainability and materiality. Aybar is the creative force behind RA Workshop, a studio he founded in 2019 in Orlando, Florida, after discovering his passion for repurposing and transforming discarded materials.
Aybar’s CDL Series (short for Construction, Demolition, and Land debris) is a profound reflection of his commitment to resourcefulness and sustainable design. The series was inspired by his experience renovating a home along the Delaware River, where he meticulously repurposed debris into his now signature sculptures. Each piece, which Aybar refers to as “Totems to Trash,” incorporates materials such as endangered American Chestnut, White Oak, Pine, and water-jet cut scrap metal. To complete each totem, Aybar uses mycelial-inspired urethane rubber castoffs, adding an organic touch to these striking works of art.
Through his CDL Series, Aybar invites viewers to reflect on the impermanence of the built world and their relationship with the environment. His ability to transform what others might discard into objects of beauty and meaning underscores his profound engagement with both natural and synthetic elements, offering a unique commentary on sustainability and creativity.
Aybar will host an open studio at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, providing the community with an opportunity to engage with his works and creative process. This open studio will be accessible to the public throughout the season, fostering connection and conversation around Aybar’s art and the larger mission of the New Wave Artist-in-Residence program.
The New Wave Artist-in-Residence program was established to amplify the voices of underrepresented artists and celebrate their contributions to the cultural fabric of the West Palm Beach community. Aybar’s work embodies the program’s mission by encouraging thoughtful engagement with sustainability, materiality, and inclusivity.
